Sobralia macrantha

Native to Mexico, Guatemala and Central America, Sobralia macrantha is a terrestrial, cane-growing orchid lacking pseudobulbs, forming clumps of upright stems bearing pleated, lance-shaped leaves. In late spring and summer it produces large, short-lived flowers, each often lasting only a day but succeeding one another over a long period, purple to magenta with a darker lip and yellow throat, reaching 12 to 15 cm across. It is grown in a free-draining, organically rich substrate, under bright filtered light, with generous and regular watering year-round.
