Sparaxis fragrans

Endemic to South Africa's Western Cape (Caledon district), Sparaxis fragrans grows on clay slopes and flats that are waterlogged in winter, within the fynbos. This small geophytic Iridaceae reaches 10 to 25 cm tall, with narrow, pointed leaves. In late winter and early spring it produces star-shaped flowers with six spreading lobes, buff to bright yellow with purple-tinged backs, giving off an unpleasant smell despite the epithet 'fragrans'. Threatened by habitat loss to agriculture, the species needs full sun and heavy soil, wet in winter and dry in summer.
