Sparaxis pillansii

Native to the Northern Cape, South Africa, Sparaxis pillansii is a cormous Iridaceae closely related to Sparaxis tricolor, from which it differs in flower colour and in having untwisted, yellow to ochre anthers. Like all sixteen species of the genus, endemic to winter-rainfall South Africa (southwestern Cape and western Karoo), it grows mainly on clay renosterveld soils, sometimes on coastal sands. The plant grows during the wet winter, flowers in spring, then spends summer dormant as a corm. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
