Sparaxis ssp hybrid

The genus Sparaxis, native to South Africa's Cape Province, comprises about a dozen cormous species in the Iridaceae family, typical of winter-rainfall fynbos. This entry is a garden hybrid, derived mainly from Sparaxis bulbifera and S. tricolor, with no precise species identifiable. A rosette of sword-shaped leaves precedes, in spring, a 15–25 cm stem bearing several star-shaped flowers with six broadly coloured tepals — white, pink, orange, red or yellow — often marked with a contrasting centre. It requires full sun, well-drained soil, and dry summer dormancy of the corm.
