Spathoglottis

Spathoglottis is a genus of terrestrial orchids — an unusual habit within the Orchidaceae — native to South East Asia, India, the Philippines and Australasia, where it grows on sunny grassy hillsides. The plants form crowded pseudobulbs, partly buried and wrapped in dry sheaths, bearing a few pleated leaves up to 30 cm long. The upright flower spike, 75 cm or more tall, carries a terminal cluster of medium-sized flowers, red, yellow or white depending on the species, opening in succession over a long period. Overall height reaches 30 to 60 cm. Grow in ordinary, humus-rich soil, in a bright position, with no marked dormancy.
