Spiloxene capensis

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Widespread in the Cape Province, South Africa, Spiloxene capensis belongs to the Hypoxidaceae family. Its star-shaped flowers, golden to pale yellow (rarely white or pink), bear dark central markings, sometimes an iridescent blue-green black, which serve as a visual cue for pollinating hopliine beetles - the nectar-less flower rewarding them only with pollen. Highly weather-sensitive, the flowers open only in warm, sunny conditions, typically between 11am and 4pm. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
