Sprekelia formosissima

Native to rocky slopes of central and southern Mexico, Sprekelia formosissima, or Aztec lily, is a bulbous plant in the Amaryllidaceae family. The bulb produces three to six dark green, strap-shaped leaves, appearing in spring together with the flower. Borne singly on a 25–30 cm stem, the flower has six vivid crimson-red, orchid-like tepals: three spreading, upward-curving upper segments and three pendent lower ones rolled into a tube. It requires a sunny position, well-drained soil, and dry dormancy in winter.
