Sternbergia clusiana

Native to the eastern Mediterranean (East Aegean islands, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Iraq), Sternbergia clusiana grows in dry, stony ground. It bears the largest flowers in the genus: greenish-yellow tepals up to 7 cm long, borne almost stemless straight from the bulb in late autumn (October-November), before the grey-green leaves appear. Not reliably hardy, it needs protection from frost in cold climates - a cold greenhouse or frame is recommended - along with sharp drainage and a warm, sunny position.
