Native to the highlands of South America, on the border between Paraguay and Brazil, Stevia rebaudiana is a fibrous-rooted herbaceous perennial in the daisy family (Asteraceae). Its upright stems bear opposite, lanceolate, finely toothed leaves prized for their high content of steviol glycosides, a natural sweetening compound. In late summer and autumn it produces small white flower heads gathered in loose corymbs. It requires a sunny position, cool, well-drained soil, regular watering, and is frost-tender below about -5°C.
