Iris unguicularis, or Algerian iris, is a rhizomatous iris native to the Mediterranean region (North Africa, Greece, Turkey), notable for flowering in winter, from November to March depending on climate. Its fragrant, lavender-blue to violet, veined flowers open close to narrow, evergreen foliage, often before the leaves have fully developed. Formerly named Iris stylosa, it is grown in full sun, in poor, very well-drained soil, ideally against a sheltered wall, and dislikes excess water and fertiliser.
