Allium subhirsutum (Amaryllidaceae), hairy garlic, is native to the Mediterranean region, from Spain and the Canary Islands to Turkey and Palestine. Growing to about 50 cm, it is recognised by its leaves fringed with long, fine hairs. In early summer it produces a loose umbel of large white flowers with pink midveins. It grows naturally in open woodland and rocky places. Grow in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil; the bulb is edible.
