Tecophilaea violiflora

Native to the coastal ranges of central Chile, between Coquimbo and Santiago, and to southern Peru, Tecophilaea violiflora is a perennial tuberous herb in the family Tecophilaeaceae, related to the Iridaceae. It reaches 15 to 30 cm tall, with a single basal, lanceolate leaf 8 to 20 cm long. One to two funnel-shaped flowers, blue, mauve, violet or occasionally white with a white throat, open in the austral spring. The species grows in extremely arid coastal lomas, relying on winter fog for moisture. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a strictly dry summer rest.
