Allium thunbergii, sometimes cited under the synonym Allium japonicum, is an ornamental chive-like onion native to Japan, Korea and China. It forms a clump of fine, hollow, cylindrical leaves that turn coppery in autumn. Flowering is late, occurring from September to November, with globular umbels of small, bright pinkish-purple flowers on slender stems. It grows in a sunny to partly shaded position, well-drained soil, and provides welcome late-season colour.
