Tigridia pavonia

Native to Mexico, Guatemala and Central America, Tigridia pavonia, the tiger flower or Mexican shell flower, grows from a shallow-planted tunicated bulb. The plant reaches 45-60 cm, with pleated, fan-shaped leaves and a slender stem. Through summer it produces a succession of large, short-lived flowers, each lasting only a day, with three spreading outer tepals in red, pink, orange, yellow or white, centred on a purple-spotted cup reminiscent of a tiger's coat. It requires full sun and well-drained soil, and is grown as a summer-flowering bulb, lifted and stored frost-free over winter in cold climates.
