Endemic to the desert coast of northern Chile, between the regions of Tarapacá and Atacama, Tigridia philippiana, known locally as 'flor del tigre', grows from an ovoid corm under conditions where moisture comes mainly from coastal fog (camanchaca) condensation. It is a perennial herbaceous plant reaching about 25 cm, with white, six-tepalled flowers typical of the genus Tigridia. Described by Ivan M. Johnston in 1929 from a specimen collected near Taltal, it does not tolerate frost. It requires well-drained soil, a bright position, and humid air rather than heavy soil watering.
