Tritonia flabellifolia

Endemic to the southwestern and south-southwestern Cape, South Africa, Tritonia flabellifolia grows on rocky sandstone or shale slopes, in renosterveld or fynbos. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 25 to 50 cm tall and bears cream flowers, streaked or edged with red on the lower tepals. It is one of the last winter-rainfall species to flower in gardens, usually in late spring or early summer. Despite habitat loss to agriculture, the species persists in 25 to 30 subpopulations. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
