Tritonia = sparaxis ‘Rood’ (? crocata) = sparaxis

The original label reflects a long-standing taxonomic confusion between the genera Tritonia and Sparaxis (Iridaceae), historically merged or treated as synonyms before modern studies separated them; the plant is most likely a Sparaxis cultivar, close to S. crocata (or tricolor), named 'Rood' (Dutch for red). Native to the winter-rainfall region of South Africa, this cormous geophyte produces a fan of narrow, sword-shaped leaves and a 20-40 cm stem bearing, in spring, widely open star-shaped flowers of vivid red with a contrasting centre. It needs sun, well-drained soil, and dry summer dormancy.
