Tulbaghia galpinii

Endemic to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, where it grows in the high mountains of the Cradock, Cathcart, Queenstown and Elliot districts, Tulbaghia galpinii is a small rhizomatous-bulbed geophyte of the family Amaryllidaceae. Its narrow, grass-like leaves release a garlic-like scent when crushed, a trait typical of the genus. Compact in habit, it reaches about 20 cm in height and produces, in summer, umbels of small star-shaped, pale green to pinkish flowers with a delicate fragrance. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, and tolerates drought well once established.
