The entry '1749 tulipa' refers to a botanical tulip whose precise species identity is uncertain; this description therefore remains general, at the level of the genus Tulipa. Native mainly to Central Asia, the Mediterranean basin and Turkey, tulips are bulbous perennials with a tunicated bulb, producing often glaucous, lance- to ovate-shaped leaves and a solitary (rarely several) cup- or star-shaped flower in spring, in a wide range of colors. They require well-drained soil, a sunny position, a cool winter period for vernalization, and a dry summer dormancy after flowering.
