Tulipa lanata

Native to Central Asia (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan) and the western Himalaya, Tulipa lanata grows at altitudes of 1,300 to 1,700 m. Its ovoid bulb, 2 to 5 cm across, is wrapped in papery brown tunics and bears long woolly hairs at the base of the inner scales, characteristic of section Lanatae. From April, a short stem carries a single large vermillion flower up to 12 cm across, its petals undulating like a scarlet handkerchief. Like most Central Asian botanical tulips, it needs sharp drainage and a dry summer rest.
