Tulipa mauritana

Tulipa mauritana, whose epithet refers to ancient Mauretania (present-day Maghreb), is a wild tulip belonging to the Tulipa sylvestris complex, found in Morocco and more widely across North Africa and the western Mediterranean basin, growing in grassland, scrubland and woodland margins. Medium-sized (up to about 40-45 cm), it has glaucous, lance-shaped, channelled leaves. Its nodding buds, bright yellow flushed reddish-orange on the outer tepals, straighten and open into a star shape in spring sunshine. It requires full sun, well-drained soil, and a dry summer rest.
