Tulipa saxatilis

Native to the rocky Aegean islands, notably Crete and Kos, Tulipa saxatilis grows on high plateaus, field margins and rocky, stony slopes. Its ovoid bulb, wrapped in a leathery brown tunic, measures 20-35 mm. Subspecies bakeri, endemic to Crete and forming large colonies on the high plateaus of the White Mountains and the Dikti range, produces deeper pink flowers with orange-yellow anthers in March-April. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position and a dry summer rest.
