Tulipa sp Fontvieille

This tulip is listed without a precise species name; the mention "Fontvieille" likely refers to a locality in Provence (a commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, near Arles and Tarascon) where the bulb was collected or observed growing naturalised. The only truly native tulip in France, present in the Bouches-du-Rhône among other departments, is Tulipa sylvestris, the wild tulip, with fragrant yellow flowers and slightly twisted petals, though other naturalised tulips (such as Tulipa raddii) are also known from Provence. The genus Tulipa (Liliaceae) comprises tunicate-bulbed geophytes with deciduous foliage, flowering in spring and requiring well-drained soil and a dry summer dormancy. As the exact species could not be confirmed, this description remains partly generic.
