Tulipa wilsoniana

Native to the mountains of Turkmenistan and Central Asia, Tulipa wilsoniana (sometimes treated as Tulipa montana) is a dwarf bulbous tulip of rocky high-altitude slopes. The bulb, protected by a thick tunic and woolly tip, produces glaucous, wavy-margined leaves emerging in late winter. In spring it bears a single cup-shaped flower, vivid vermilion-red, marked with a blackish-green blotch at the base of the petals and yellow stamens. It is grown in full sun, in poor, well-drained soil, with the dry summer dormancy typical of botanical mountain tulips.
