Ungernia

As the species field was left blank, this entry describes the genus Ungernia as a whole. A close relative of the genus Lycoris, Ungernia comprises about ten bulbous species in the Amaryllidaceae family, native to Central Asia and the Middle East (Iran, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan). The bulbs, which do not renew their basal plate, elongate with age into a neck reaching up to 50 cm. The broad, deciduous leaves often appear after the summer flowering, which produces an umbel of pink to red tubular flowers on a leafless stem. The genus requires sun, well-drained soil, and dry dormancy.
