Urginea macrocentra

Native to South Africa, where it grows in damp grassland and at the margins of marshes, from KwaZulu-Natal to the Transkei in the Eastern Cape, Urginea macrocentra (now reclassified as Drimia macrocentra) is a bulbous plant of the Hyacinthaceae family, locally called "Natal slangkop" because its young inflorescence resembles a raised snake's head. Its bulb, often half-buried, produces deciduous leaves already withered by flowering time. In summer a tall stem bears a long raceme of small, star-shaped whitish flowers. Like other Drimia, it contains toxic bufadienolides. It grows in moist to fresh soil, in sun to part shade.
