Urginea scilla sp ?

The precise species of this squill (labelled 'sp ?' on the original tag) could not be confirmed; the description is therefore given at genus level, Urginea, now often placed within Drimia. This genus comprises bulbous plants from around the Mediterranean and Africa, with a large bulb wrapped in papery brown scales, producing leathery basal leaves in autumn that die back before flowering. A tall stem then bears a dense spike of small white flowers edged with green. All parts are toxic. It requires a sunny position, very well-drained soil, and tolerates pronounced summer drought.
