Vanilla planifolia

Native to humid tropical regions from Mexico through Central and South America, Vanilla planifolia is a climbing orchid with a fleshy green stem and aerial roots, able to reach several metres in length as it scrambles up supporting trees. It produces pale green to yellowish, waxy flowers which, after pollination — usually done by hand in cultivation — develop into the well-known vanilla pods. The plant requires a warm, very humid climate, filtered light under canopy cover, a support to climb on, and a free-draining, organically rich substrate resembling a tropical forest floor.
