Watsonia angusta

Endemic to the Cape provinces of South Africa, ranging from the Cederberg and Cape Peninsula to the foothills of the Drakensberg, Watsonia angusta is a cormous perennial forming clumps of upright, sword-shaped, grey-green leaves. From spring into summer it produces an often-branched spike of scarlet, tubular flowers attractive to nectar-feeding birds. In the wild it grows in montane marshes and along streambanks within fynbos vegetation. It requires moist but well-drained soil and a sunny position; once established it tolerates drought and moderate cold well.
