Native to South Africa, where it grows in rocky mountain grassland from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to Swaziland, Watsonia gladioloides is a cormous plant of the Iridaceae family. A summer-growing species, it produces 2 to 4 leaves with thickened margins and midrib, fanned at the base of a stem 35 to 50 cm tall. In summer it bears funnel-shaped, deep red flowers marked with darker streaks, carried in a spike. It grows in full sun in well-drained soil, with regular watering during summer growth and a drier dormancy in winter.
