Watsonia hysterantha

Endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, between Saldanha and Langebaan, Watsonia hysterantha is a striking cormous Iridaceae reaching 60 cm tall, with narrow, erect, leathery leaves. It is the only species in the genus to flower before its leaves have fully developed, hence its name, from the Greek hysteros (after) and anthos (flower). Spikes of scarlet flowers appear just before or after the first autumn rains, followed shortly after by the leaves, which persist until late spring. The corm is protected by several tough outer tunics. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
