Watsonia pyramidata

Native to the Cape mountains of South Africa, Watsonia pyramidata (often treated as synonymous with W. borbonica) is a perennial cormous Iridaceae forming a fan of rigid, sword-shaped leaves. In late spring and summer, a tall scape 1.2-1.8 m high bears a spike of large, tubular flowers flaring into six lobes, pink to rosy red, occasionally white. The foliage dies back after flowering and regrows in autumn. It requires full sun, well-drained soil and regular watering during growth, with a dry summer rest in its native range.
