Watsonia spectabilis

Native to South Africa, from the Western Cape to the Agulhas Plain, Watsonia spectabilis grows on sandy flats, often near damp areas. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 25-50 cm tall, with the typical fan of sword-shaped leaves of the genus. It bears a few-flowered spike of large, tubular scarlet flowers opening into six flaring lobes. Like other Watsonia species, it needs full sun and well-drained soil, with steady watering during active growth and a drier rest period when dormant.
