Worsleya rayneri

Endemic to the Serra dos Órgãos mountains in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, Worsleya rayneri (syn. W. procera), nicknamed the "blue amaryllis" or "empress of Brazil", is the sole species in its genus. It grows clinging to high rock faces and cliffs where drainage is excellent and the air humid. This large bulb, partly exposed above the soil, produces long, arching, strap-like leaves up to 90 cm and a stem up to 1.5 m bearing, in summer, 5 to 10 large blue-violet flowers streaked with white, up to 15 cm across. It requires a free-draining substrate, bright light and good humidity.
