Zephyranthes atamasco

Native to the south-eastern United States (from Florida to Maryland and Mississippi), Zephyranthes atamasco grows in moist meadows and open woodland of the coastal plains. This Amaryllidaceae forms small clumps 20-35 cm tall from a bulb, with narrow, glossy, strap-like leaves. In spring, each bulb produces a single funnel-shaped flower, white and sometimes pink-tinged, with six lobes and bright yellow stamens, turning pink with age. Flowering, often triggered by heavy rain, gives it the common name 'rain lily'. It prefers moist to damp soil in sun or part shade.
