Zephyranthes rosea

Native to the Caribbean (Cuba, the Cayman Islands, the Lucayan Archipelago), Zephyranthes rosea, the pink rain lily, is a small herbaceous amaryllid, 15 to 20 cm tall, growing from a spherical tunicated bulb 1.5 to 2.5 cm across. Its 5-6 narrow, dark green linear leaves surround a short scape bearing a single erect or slightly inclined, funnel-shaped pink flower. Flowering, in summer and autumn, is triggered by heavy rain, as in all rain lilies. Grow in full sun, well-drained soil, with ample watering in the warm season.
The genus
A genus widely distributed throughout America and generally found in wet areas. We have not yet explored many of the 30 species of this genus, but it seems to contain many interesting plants from all sort of habitats. 'Rainlilies' generally flower after a heavy rainfall, (sometimes before, which may also be triggered by low barometric pressure which often coincides with periods of rainfall). Once established they are best left undisturbed. The genus is similar to Habranthus (Zephyranthes has erect flowers with evenly distributed stamens).
