Iris Louisiana »

The name "Louisiana iris" designates, not a single species, but a horticultural group of rhizomatous irises resulting mainly from crosses between wild species of the south-eastern United States (Iris fulva, I. giganticaerulea, I. brevicaulis, I. hexagona, I. nelsonii), all native to the marshes and wet prairies of Louisiana and neighbouring states. These irises form clumps of sword-shaped foliage and produce, in spring, a huge range of flat flowers in almost every colour. They thrive in rich, acidic soil, constantly moist or even waterlogged, and a sunny position. Catalogue entry corresponding to the group, species not specified.
