The name "Louisiana iris" refers not to a single species but to a horticultural group of rhizomatous irises derived mainly from crosses among the wild species native to the southeastern United States (Iris fulva, I. giganticaerulea, I. brevicaulis, I. hexagona, I. nelsonii), all found in the marshes and wet prairies of Louisiana and neighbouring states. These irises form clumps of sword-shaped foliage and produce, in spring, a wide range of flat flowers in almost every colour.
