Hyacinthus jacinthe

"Hyacinth" is the common name for Hyacinthus orientalis, a bulb native to the Near East in the Asparagaceae family. Cultivated since antiquity and extensively developed by Dutch growers, it offers a compact stalk of highly fragrant bell-shaped flowers ranging from white to deep blue, pink, and yellow. Its early flowering, in late winter, makes it an emblematic plant for pot forcing to bloom indoors by Christmas. In open ground, it needs rich, well-drained soil and a sunny to partly shaded spot.
