Bearded iris

Bearded irises are the many garden cultivars derived from Iris germanica, a rhizomatous species native to the Mediterranean and Balkan region, believed to originate from a cross between Iris pallida and Iris variegata. Their large, fragrant flowers have three upright petals (standards) and three drooping petals (falls) marked with a fuzzy beard, in a huge range of colours. Plants reach 60-90 cm and form vigorous clumps from creeping rhizomes. Easy to grow in full sun with well-drained soil, they flower in late spring; rhizomes are best divided every three to four years.
