Colchicum nivale=? szovitsii

The exact identity of this plant remains uncertain, between Colchicum nivale and Colchicum szovitsii, two closely related species native to Anatolia, the Caucasus and northern Iran. Both grow in montane to alpine habitats, often on sandy or stony ground kept moist by melting snow, and form a small corm about 2-3 cm long. The leaves, still only partly developed at flowering time, accompany one to several pale mauve to pink spring flowers with gold at the base of the stamens. Flowering occurs early in spring, as soon as the snow melts. Cultivation requires well-drained soil, moist in winter and spring, and a dry summer dormancy.
