Calochortus luteus (Liliaceae), the golden mariposa lily, is a bulbous plant endemic to California, growing in grasslands and grassy slopes. In spring it bears, on a slender stem, one to several widely open, cup-shaped flowers of bright yellow marked with reddish-brown at the petal base, sometimes veined. Grow in full sun, in light, well-drained soil kept dry during summer dormancy; hardy to around -10 °C, protected from excessive winter wet.
