Iris lycotis

Native to western Iran, southern Armenia and the Turkish-Iranian border area, Iris lycotis (sometimes treated as Iris iberica subsp. lycotis) is a rhizomatous perennial of the Oncocyclus section reaching 25 to 30 cm in height. From late April into early May it bears a single large flower, deep purple-brown to almost black, densely veined with the veins converging on a dark signal patch. Locally nicknamed "wolf's ears," the species occurs in as many as eight colour forms, including a cherry-red variant. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy.
